At first, I was very disappointed - especially with the putting. I scanned the internet for a for a few tips to make the game more enjoyable, and found a common theme - this game takes some practice and some thought, but if you put a little effort into it, it's very rewarding. Here are some useful things I've discovered:
1) Putting - read the "most helpful" Amazon review - very well said. You must read the putt, just like in real golf! Read the break, judge the distance, and adjust if you deem it necessary. The first time I played, I three and four putted every hole. Now, I can make most putts under 10 feet, and have even made a few over seventy feet!
2) Course management - watch the wind, how uphill/downhill a hole plays, where the water and sand is, etc. Don't hit driver on every hole! You'll wind up in a bad position, or left with a tricky shot (i.e. between clubs, less than 80 yards - something that requires a 65-70% shot). Again, this game is a great simulation of real golf - because a good round is a round well managed.
3) Use the club tuner - I increased the Power on my driver, maxed out the draw bias, and minimized spin. I'm hitting drives well over 300 yards now.
4) On short, "feel" shots, or shots between clubs, try adjusting the loft of the club - lower right corner - you can hover on the club icon, hold B, and open or close the club face. I find this useful in shaving a few yards off a club.
5) Learn how to manage your skillset - "General Experience" points combine with specific skills to help you go up a level. Don't max out your power and leave everything else alone. Focus on taking the skills up in tandem. An easy, quick way to earn a lot of experience in Career mode is to play the Tiger Challenge - the tasks are short, and when complete, you earn a lot of points. Spend an afternoon doing this and watch how many level ups you can get.
